Go West

Well, I’ve had a LONG dry spell…  but I have a good excuse: moving 2300 miles, starting a new job, and trying to keep up with a 5-week crammed-in summer course for my Master’s degree.

I’m now officially a software test engineer for a graphing calculator company…  very slick job and I’m loving it!  I may have finally found a job that I would do for free (if I were independently wealthy, that is).

Anyhow, not really in the mood to wax long-winded, but I must post the following video.  I’ve already shared it with a few people, but it’s one of those things that is traumatic and can only be ameliorated by infecting others!!!  🙂

An amalgamation – TV double-take

A few interesting articles, recommended for your viewing/reading pleasure:

Real thugs comment on The Wire (I don’t watch The Wire, but I’m intrigued just because of this article). It’s a pretty cool concept… though I can’t imagine being the journalist who hangs out with these guys… I mean, how’d that ever come about?

More Coding Horror… on what House has in common with the features that sell products. His title says it all: Every User Lies. 🙂 I’m thinking this might help me become a more aware user… do I really need that feature??? And maybe, just maybe, I might RTFM. 😉

Where Math Meets Music

Proof that my professor is on of the most fun mathematicians I’ve had the pleasure of knowing, he snuck a link to this video into our homework assignment for this week.  I was wondering why he linked to YouTube and, suffice it to say, had to share with you all.  I’ve already watched it 4 times this morning (Quinn made me play it twice because he liked the music) and could watch it over and over.

For you non-math types, I’m sure you won’t quite get all the references but hopefully enough to gain an appreciation for the flavor of it (not to mention the effort and creativity in writing it).

A few of the references (for starters):

Oops, almost forgot to credit these guys (in the video) at

Apparently, this actually made the rounds back in ’05 – but this is a new one for me.

Some great movies

Funny, yet somehow sad…

While there’s something that feels very justified in a member of the press being hounded by “paparazzi”, I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for this lady who declined a press pass and went undercover to expose the sleazy world of hacker-dom. For more of this story, click here.  It sort of makes me think of a cop being caught speeding.

The Mississippi Delta Was Shining Like a National Guitar

Just got through watching a tribute to Paul Simon last night (no, not that Paul Simon – this one). He was awarded the first annual Gershwin Prize by the Library of Congress – for contributions of “a composer or performer whose lifetime contributions exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins.” I knew I liked Paul Simon, but I’d forgotten just how much ’til I got a chance to hear many of his best performed by Simon himself, as well as by many other musical greats.

It turns out, the ceremony was held back at the end of May, but wasn’t broadcast until last night. I’m grateful to my father-in-law who told me to turn it on (he knows I enjoy Ladysmith Black Mambazo – and they were, of course, among those performing), because I watch so little television that I never would have seen it otherwise. I didn’t get to see all of it, but did get to see Ladysmith, Lyle Lovett, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, the Dixie Hummingbirds, Alison Krauss, some great video footage of a few of Simon’s memorable moments… if you ever get a chance to check it out, I think you’ll enjoy it.

I’ve added a few clips I could find on YouTube below… enjoy!

If I wanted to advertise anything… anything – the only people I would trust are the ones who handle Budweiser. They are the most consistently funny ads I’ve had the pleasure to watch. From the frogs, to the lizards, to Clydesdale’s with and without dalmatians, to these that’s I’ve just come across. I love them… “man!”

BTW – do not watch the first one if you are the type to be offended by mostly-bleeped-out-yet-pretty-obvious-what-they’re-saying swearing footage.
